Balzan produced a convincing performance at the Ta’ Qali National Stadium on Saturday, September 5, defeating Birzebbuga St Peter’s 3-0 in the fourth round of the VBET Malta Premier Opening Round.

The victory saw Balzan take all three points in impressive fashion, while Birzebbuga suffered a fourth consecutive defeat at the start of their league campaign. The match was played at 18:00 at the National Stadium.

Yuel sets Balzan on their way

Balzan wasted little time taking control of the contest. Valentino Yuel opened the scoring in the 13th minute, giving the home side an early advantage.

The hosts continued to apply pressure and doubled their lead before half-time. Oluwatobiloba Awosanya found the net in the 30th minute, leaving Birzebbuga with a difficult task heading into the interval.

Balzan therefore went into the break 2-0 ahead, having established a commanding position after a strong first-half display.

Macula completes the job

Birzebbuga needed a quick response after the restart, but instead it was Balzan who added a third goal.

Lucas Macula scored in the 67th minute to make it 3-0 and effectively put the outcome beyond doubt. The goal capped a dominant evening for Balzan, who maintained their clean sheet until the final whistle.

There were several changes during the final stages as both coaches used their benches, but Birzebbuga could not find a way back into the game. The final score remained Balzan 3-0 Birzebbuga.

A much-needed boost for Balzan

The result represents an important step forward for Balzan after an inconsistent opening to the season. Before the match, they had collected four points from their first three league games, beating Gzira United 2-1 after a draw with Marsaxlokk and a defeat to Mosta.

Birzebbuga, meanwhile, arrived at the National Stadium without a point after three matches. Their previous league fixtures had ended in defeats against Floriana, Zabbar St Patrick and Sliema Wanderers, leaving them at the bottom end of the early standings.

The 3-0 defeat means Birzebbuga’s difficult start continues, while Balzan can take considerable confidence from a comprehensive victory and a clean sheet.
