Northern Ireland U21 delivered a ruthless display of finishing at the rain-soaked Centenary Stadium on Saturday, securing a comfortable 4-0 victory over Malta in their UEFA European U21 Championship qualifier. Despite a spirited showing from the hosts, Tommy Wright’s side capitalized on key moments—scoring twice in each half—to sweep aside Davide Mazzotta’s men.
The opening exchanges were a cagey affair as both teams fought for territorial control. Malta threatened first with a moment of audacious creativity in the 16th minute, as Lucas Caruana intercepted possession in midfield and attempted a lob from the halfway line, though Northern Ireland keeper Stephen McMullan tracked back to collect comfortably.
Malta squandered a golden chance to break the deadlock three minutes later. A precise long pass from Benjamin Hili found Brooklyn Borg, who unselfishly squared for Shaisen Attard. However, Attard’s deflected effort was gathered by McMullan. Down the other end, Joshua Briggs nodded a dangerous wide free-kick just off-target for the visitors.
The hosts continued to prove dangerous on the break, with Brooklyn Borg firing inches over the crossbar in the 30th minute following a crisp through-ball from Andy Borg.
However, Malta were immediately punished for their missed chances. Just a minute later, Shea Kearney picked up the ball on the right flank and unleashed a thunderous drive that clipped the inside of the post before nestling in the back of the net to give Northern Ireland a 31st-minute lead.
The visitors doubled their advantage right before the interval. A swift counter-attack caught Malta off guard, leaving Jack Patterson space at the edge of the penalty box to calmly slot past Karl Sargent into the bottom corner.
Patterson at the Double as Visitors Control Second Half
Malta emerged from the break looking to dictate the tempo and pressed higher up the pitch. Attard dragged a shot narrowly wide from a short-corner routine on 56 minutes, but Northern Ireland soon put the match out of reach.
In the 63rd minute, Malta failed to clear a Northern Ireland corner kick, and Jack Patterson reacted quickest, striking cleanly past Sargent to net his second of the afternoon and extend the lead to 3-0.
The hosts refused to throw in the towel and came agonisingly close to a consolation in the 71st minute. Substitute Trezeguet Zammit broke through the Northern Irish defence and lifted the ball over the onrushing McMullan, only to see his effort cleared off the goal line by a recovering defender.
To add salt to Maltese wounds, Northern Ireland went straight down the other end to grab a fourth two minutes later. Bayley McCann whipped in a cross from the left wing that evaded everyone in the box and sailed directly into the net.
As the downpour intensified over Ta’ Qali, Tommy Wright’s side professionally managed the closing stages to seal a resounding victory and all three points.
Malta U21 will look to bounce back at the Centenary Stadium on Wednesday, September 30, when they host European heavyweights Germany in their final home match of the qualifying campaign (18:00 CEST kick-off).
